White papers
Longer-form technical papers written by Apex Power Distribution engineers. Each one takes a position, explains the reasoning and cites the applicable standards — read them online or download the PDF.

Preserving the UL 891 Listing
How field modifications void switchboard certification — and the approved pathways to restore compliance
A UL 891 listing certifies a low-voltage switchboard exactly as it was designed, assembled and tested at the manufacturer's facility — and only in that configuration. This paper examines the field modifications most commonly responsible for voiding a listing (enclosure cutting and drilling, compromised environmental ratings, removed dead-front barriers, bus taps and clearance changes, torque deviations, component substitutions and installations beyond the tested short-circuit rating) and the two recognized pathways for modifying or remediating equipment without sacrificing certification: manufacturer-authorized field modification kits and third-party field evaluation.
Covers: What the UL 891 listing actually covers · Physical and structural modifications · Busbar and electrical alterations · Component substitution and ratings violations · Consequences of a voided listing · Restoring compliance: the approved pathways · Recommendations

Custom Automatic Transfer Switches for Critical Uptime
Engineering the transfer switch around the facility — not the catalog
When a facility loses utility power, one device decides what happens next. The automatic transfer switch senses the outage, starts the transfer and carries every downstream load until normal power returns — which makes it one of the most consequential components in the electrical system and one of the most casually specified. This paper explains how transfer switches work in the standby power chain, what open, delayed and closed transitions actually do, why bypass isolation matters where loads cannot tolerate a service outage, how ratings and coordination are set, and how to integrate the switch with generators, UPS systems and controls.
Covers: Why transfer switches are critical to uptime · How transfer switches work in the standby power chain · Transition types and where each fits · What an application-engineered transfer switch really means · Ratings, sizing and coordination · Bypass isolation and maintainability · Integration with generators, UPS and controls · Enclosures, environments and installation · Common selection mistakes and a pre-selection checklist · Testing and maintenance considerations
